with Scent Work Judge Kathryn Butts

With her signature sense of humor and quick wit, Kathryn is a sought-after instructor, coach, and judge for AKC Scent Work and UKC Nosework. After  “failing out” of agility class when her dog proved far more interested in sniffing the ground than running and jumping, Kathryn redirected her focus to the emerging sport of nosework — and never looked back.

Through many trials (and more than a few tribulations), Kathryn and her Scottish Terrier, Bentley, became the fifth team in UKC history to earn the Elite Nosework title which also secured him a place in the UKC Nosework Hall of Fame. Her judging highlights include officiating at the first AKC Regional Scent Work Competition and the Inaugural Scent Work Master National Competition.

As a coach, Kathryn is dedicated to developing each team’s highest potential. She takes particular pride in the accomplishments of her students and in mentoring the next generation of nosework instructors and judges. In addition, Kathryn is a CGC and ATT Evaluator for AKC as well as a CPDT-KA.

Beyond nosework, Kathryn and her Scottish Terriers compete in Earthdog, Rally, Fast CAT, and CAT. They also enjoy FlyBall, hiking, endless games of fetch, and well-earned naps on the couch. Kathryn firmly believes that nosework is a sport for every dog and strives to make each search both fun and achievable.

Kathryn and her husband live in Austin, Texas, where she works in finance while maintaining an active teaching and judging schedule.
